My african dwarf frog’s food is slipping between the rocks at the bottom?
I large marbles adn stones as the substrate (i bought this before i learned that gravel is more ideal) so a lot of the food is slipping down to the bottom. will it be hard for him to dig down to get it, and could it hurt him? should i redo the tank and put gravel in instead?
also, is a filter necessary for him? ive read different view points on it. i dont want him to die!
ADFs don’t really dig down for food. Their front legs are fragile and aren’t build for such things. It would work better if you had sand as a substrate, then the food couldn’t fall in between the pieces of gravel. Even aquarium gravel is big enough that the food could disappear. Until you can change it, maybe get a plastic lid, and put his food inside it when you feed him. The edge of the lid should keep most of it where he can get to it.
You can keep ADFs with or without a filter. If you get 1. you just don’t want 1 that makes a lot of surface movement. ADFs are air breathers, and they have to come to the surface to breathe. Not having a filter makes it easier for them to breathe, that way they don’t get a snoutful of water from an unexpected ripple in the water. But if you don’t have 1, then you should be prepared to do more frequent water changes.
